Career readiness encompasses more than just obtaining a college degree or excelling in a major. According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), it involves acquiring and demonstrating essential competencies for a successful transition into the workplace, highlighting the importance of soft skills.
Employers have noted that students often lack these crucial skills when entering the workforce. To address this, NACE has identified 8 key competencies that students should develop, and faculty play a significant role in fostering these competencies throughout students' time at Ole Miss.
Introduction to NACE Career Competencies
- Career and Self-development
- Communication
- Critical Thinking
- Equity and Inclusion
- Leadership
- Professionalism
- Teamwork
- Technology
How Faculty Can Support the NACE Career Competencies:
- Integrate Career Competencies in Syllabi/Learning Outcomes
- Explicitly state which NACE competencies are addressed in the course.
- Align learning outcomes with NACE competencies.
- Consider using NACE's language in your syllabus and course materials to describe competencies.
NACE Syllabus Language Examples
- Incorporate Career Competencies in Assignments/Activities
- Utilize real-world projects and case studies that allow students to apply NACE competencies.
- Encourage students to reflect on their learning and how it relates to their career development.
- Provide opportunities for students to practice articulating their skills and experiences in a professional setting.
- Consider using assessments that specifically evaluate NACE competencies.
These quick, adaptable activities help integrate career readiness into your courses by connecting classroom learning with real-world skills and professional development.
If you want to brainstorm creating lessons, activities, and assignments for your class or group, please contact us at career@bus.olemiss.edu.
