AI for Business Applications Course
OXFORD, Miss. – Dr. Sumali Conlon is an Associate Professor of Management Information Systems at the Ole Miss School of Business Administration. She is originally from Bangkok, Thailand; however, she earned a Master of Science in Mathematics from the University of Nebraska at Kearney and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Illinois Institute of Technology.
Her research and teaching interests include business analytics, database systems, knowledge management, machine learning, natural language processing, sentiment analysis, and text mining. She is extremely accomplished in the field of artificial intelligence, and her work makes her the ideal professor to develop a new course titled AI for Business Applications.
The course provides comprehensive coverage of the fundamentals and applications of emerging fields such as generative AI, prompt engineering, and text analytics. Dr. Conlon created the course in response to the significant impact AI has had on business and many other fields.
She explains, “Understanding AI gives students the opportunity to stay current and competitive in the job market. By learning about AI, students will be able to enhance work efficiency, perform data analysis, and improve decision-making in their future jobs.”
The primary learning goals of the course are for students to develop a thorough understanding of artificial intelligence and its subfields and to demonstrate that knowledge in real-world business scenarios. These subfields include natural language processing, large language models, and related topics such as machine learning, prompt engineering, agentic AI, and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG).
Students are then challenged to apply these concepts to practical business applications. Assessment in the course includes two written exams and two Python-based projects. This course equips students with valuable skills that help prepare them for the professional world and set them apart in the industry.
